HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) -- Temperence Time got his seventh victory in 12 starts Sunday with a 41/2-length victory in the $40,000 Crabapple Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Trained by Kenny Smith, the Remington Park Derby winner owned and bred by Robert Barker and Elmer Moses had no difficulty with the field of nine older horses at the one-mile distance, finishing in 1:37.73.
With Tim Doocy aboard, the 4-year-old gelding by Temperence Hill, out of Jury's Still Out, rallied in the backstretch to pass four horses in the second turn, taking a 21/2-length lead at the head of the stretch. Temperence Time paid $6.60, $4.60 and $3.60. "He is starting to get everything together," Smith said. "As a young horse, he couldn't take dirt hitting him in the face. Now, dirt doesn't seem to bother him. Next race? I just don't know."
Jims'smrtee stayed near the lead from the start, but couldn't get in front or fight off Temperence Time's bid, finishing second to pay $10.80 and $7.20. Magic Cat, who broke poorly from the gate, paid $7.80 in third.
A crowd of 10,798 wagered $1,048,085 on the nine-race card. Betting at simulcast outlets totaling $2,100,736 brought the total handle to $3,148,821. No one hit all six winners (7-4-10-8-5-8) in Classix betting, leaving a carryover of $34,609 for Wednesday's racing. Four of six winners was worth $89.60.
