The safe rooms are designed to help Oklahomans survive tornadoes. So far, more than 1.1 million dollars has been distributed to homeowners in the form $2,000 rebates.

The program was implemented after last May's deadly tornadoes. The deadline for applying for the rebates was November 30th. The above-ground safe rooms or in-ground storm shelters must be completed to FEMA specifications by December 31st.

Almost 1,400 people applied for the rebates. The state has enough money for 6,400 of the rebates. Civil Emergency Management Director says there is a 14.7 million funding shortfall.
