(Little-AP) -- The F-B-I has entered the case of a Seminole man shot and killed by a Seminole Nation law officer trying to investigate an arson case.
Gary Johnson is a spokesman for the F-B-I. Johnson says 23-year-old Daniel Ray Jones died after allegedly assaulting a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer with a baseball bat, and reportedly approaching another officer with a knife last night. Jones received a fatal gunshot wound during the encounter at his residence which is believed to be located in or near Indian Country.
The Oklahoma Medical Examiner's office says Jones was dead at the scene. Seminole County Sheriff Charles Sisco says his deputies had tried to talk to Jones earlier about a barn being burned down. But Sisco says the man wouldn't cooperate. Sisco contacted the B-I-A which sent the tribal officers to investigate.
Major crimes occurring in Indian Country fall into the jurisdiction of the F-B-I.
