(Detroit-AP) -- Tulsa's schools superintendent got the most votes today to lead Detroit's troubled public schools, but the governor's nominee to the board vetoed the selection.
Five board members voted to name John Thompson chief executive officer of Detroit schools, but State Treasurer Mark Murray voted for Jerome Harris.
It wasn't clear immediately if that meant Murray would receive the appointment instead of Thompson, or if another vote or some other action would be taken.
At least five of the seven board members had to agree on the choice. The state takeover law requires Governor John Engler's appointee to the board be part of the majority.
The meeting continued late Tuesday.
