(Oklahoma City -AP) -- A Duncan man who says he converted two rifles into automatic weapons to test a federal gun law has been convicted of unlawfully possessing machine guns. John Lee Haney says a law prohibiting unlicensed people from possessing machine guns infringes on his constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
Haney's attorney, William Early, defended his client's actions. Early says the weapons were tools of civil disobedience. He says they weren't possessed to commit crimes. Prosecutors grilled Haney about allegations that he made threats against a Duncan school and law enforcement officers. Haney says he never threatened anyone.
