Former Cherokee chief Wilma Mankiller says the
best way to further American Indian identity in the next century is
through mainstream political activism.

Mankiller is urging Indian nations to keep strong ideas and
opinions concerning sovereign rights.

But she says they shouldn't stray too far from their tribal
identity, individually or collectively.

Mankiller served as Cherokee chief for ten years, beginning in
1985.

She made her remarks in a speech Friday in Tulsa.
