A Santa Fe High School student who won a federal judge's protection from punishment by school district officials.. led an organized prayer before her school's season-opening football game.
Classmates elected 17-year-old Marian Lynn Ward to deliver inspirational remarks at the Santa Fe Indians' game against Crosby.
Superintendent Richard Ownby had warned any student who violated an appeals court ruling banning pre-game prayer would be disciplined.
Hours before the game, U-S District Judge Sim Lake issued a temporary restraining order barring the school district from punishing Ward if she leads the prayer.
She did and most spectators in the stands stood up and aplauded her when she finished her prayer.
