OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- After setting the early pace, Burn Brightly fizzled a bit and Argentina Avenue caught up to take a 3/4-length victory in the $35,000 Ponca City Stakes at Remington Park on Sunday.
Burn Brightly hit a quarter mile in :22 1/5 and reached a half mile in :43 4/5. But by mid-stretch, jockey Lonnie Meche moved his horse up and it was a sprint between the two from there. I'm Allthat settled for third.
The Ponca City was run in a meet fastest 1:09 2/5 for six furlongs.
Argentina Avenue paid $7.40 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.80 to show. Burn Brightly, the beaten 7-5 favorite, returned $2.80 to place and $2.20 to show. I'm Allthat paid $2.60 to show.
The win was the fifth from 18 lifetime starts for the California-bred Argentina Avenue. The dark bay daughter of Avenue of Flags from the Nostalgia mare Table for Ten earned $21,000 to move to $241,255 in her career.
Before the race, veteran trainer Donnie Von Hemel won his 500th Remington Park
Von Hemel saddled Burn Brightly but could not collect win number 501 at Remington.
In the seventh he sent Usual Lies out to win his 500th at Remington, the first trainer to reach that plateau.
Racing continues Monday at Remington Park with the first event scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
