The Jim Giles Wild, Wild Weather show storms into Sand Springs Tuesday night. With that in mind, the News on 6 visited Sand Springs Monday to find out a little more about what makes the town unique.
News on 6 anchor Craig Day says Sand Springs is a town of about 18,000 people hugging both sides of the Arkansas River. A place where the rolling hills meets the woodlands and where smaller town lifestyle is only minutes away from Tulsa.
Chamber president J.C. Kinder: “our kids live here, their parents live here. Their grandparents lived here. They just don't move away. It's a nice place to stay and they stay and raise their families."
If you want to get a flavor of where the locals eat, visit the Crescent Cafe. For years, folks have packed the popular restaurant for good food, and good conversation. Lora Gee with the Crescent Cafe: "come for breakfast, get the omelet. The ham and eggs. Lunch Chicken Fried Steak. Friday night all you can eat catfish."
In addition to the great food, charm and friendly people, Sand Springs is also known for another attraction that has gained nationwide recognition. Discoveryland is entering its 30th season this year. Each summer, the musicals "Oklahoma" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are performed at the outdoor event, drawing more than 40,000 people each year. Bill Jeffers with Discoveryland "When they leave, they are singing and dancing and have enjoyed a good family experience of theater and we hope that is what our impact is on their lives."
Discoveryland has been named as the top tourist destination in Oklahoma and one of the top 100 events in America. So get off the highway, take in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Sand Springs.
