Tulsa Public School students and parents weigh-in on starting school so late in the fall. Their opinions could help move up the start day next year.
Tulsa is the only area school district that started school after Labor Day this year, but that all could change. The district surveyed a random sample of parents to see what they thought about the district's start date.
The majority of parents preferred an August start. That's also the consensus among many students at Memorial High School. A student-led survey says the preferred date is August 15th.
Students say starting earlier allows them to finish the semester before Christmas break. Memorial High School student Tiffany Provenzano: “by doing this it helps so you don’t go off for two weeks and then come back and take finals. That makes finals alot harder and unfortunately kids forget information very quickly."
August 15th might be a little too early but the Tulsa district is working on a compromise.
