OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A proposal to ask voters to increase the sales tax on gasoline and diesel is a step closer to appearing on an election ballot.
The state Supreme Court says a petition drive asking for the vote has enough signatures.
The next step is for the secretary of state to publish a notice that citizens have ten days to file a protest to the petition.
The petition circulated by the group Oklahomans for Safe Bridges and Roads calls for the state's 17-cent per gallon gas tax and 14-cent per gallon diesel tax to increase to 22-cents per gallon. The money would be used for highway and bridge programs.
