Longtime electronics-maker Lowrance made its name with sonar and GPS gadgets for fishermen. But for the first time, the Tulsa-based company is testing the waters in the automobile market.
The Lowrance Iway 500 has already hooked one prestigious award, taking the prize for best new mobile electronic product at the SEMA show. The Iway has a 3-D display, mp3 player, touch screen controls and much more, all for a lower price, Lowrance says than competitors.
Lowrance says the large, bright display is what really sets it apart though. The unit is ever waterproof. Jim Luetjen with Lowrance Electronics: "so even the motorcycle market and the RV market and the ATV market is very interested in our unit."
Lowrance says they drew on their experience with boating products, which have to stand up to bright sun-glare and other outdoor conditions.
