OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Some Oklahoma students are helping design cities of the future.
Three students -- Catherine Salazar, Alyssa Grossen and Thalia Nguyen (Win) -- led their team to a first-place finish in the Oklahoma regionals of the 2005 National Engineers Week Future City Competition.
The team -- from Midwest City's Saint Philip Neri School -- earned a trip to Washington to compete for the national title and a vacation at Space Camp. Their school also became the first to win the regional two years in a row.
Officials say yesterday's competition encouraged middle school students to learn math, engineering, writing and public speaking skills. Teams use computers to design cities, then write essays and abstracts similar to chamber of commerce publications.
