Some of Oklahoma's tribal leaders say US senator-elect Tom Coburn's assignment to the Senate's Indian Affairs Committee is good news.

Party leadership named Coburn on Monday to the Indian Affairs as well as the Judiciary and Governmental Affairs committees.

The Oklahoma Republican takes office on January 4th. Coburn stirred controversy during the Senate race when he said many Cherokees are not really Indians. He also called treaties "primitive agreements."
