WASHINGTON (AP) _ D-C Mayor Tony Williams and Council Chair Linda Cropp will meet Monday to try to save baseball for the city.
Cropp's spokesman says she asked for the meeting, and that she also wants to meet with baseball officials to discuss the city's stadium financing plan. The Montreal Expos' move to D-C hinges on the city enacting a financing plan that's acceptable to baseball by December 31st.
Cropp and Williams haven't spoken in person since last Monday, a day before Cropp amended the plan to require that half the construction costs be privately financed. Baseball rejected that provision.
City officials say they are entertaining several private financing offers, including one from a group of banks. But they aren't offering any details.
Cropp could call a special session of the council next week if private funding does come together.
