ASHBURN, Va. (AP) _ The National Football League is fining Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis for wearing the wrong color socks.

The league fined Portis five-thousand dollars today for violating the league's uniform rules. Portis wore red socks in last Sunday's win over the New York Giants. The team usually wears white socks.

Safety Sean Taylor was also fined five-thousand dollars for making the same fashion statement. He also received a 75-hundred dollar fine for unnecessary roughness during the game.

Taylor and Portis are both ex-Miami Hurricanes. Portis said he wore the socks because ... quote ... ``If you're not looking sweet, you really can't play too sweet.''

Portis ran for 148 yards during the game.
