A lot of folks are helping out this Christmas with our Salvation Army Angel Tree, but a community without a local Salvation Army chapter is taking matters into its own hands.

News on 6 anchor Scott Thompson says the city of Skiatook has been dedicated to making the season bright for local families for several years.

This Christmas, Angel Trees are set up all over town, in banks, churches, and in optometrist Scott Carlson's office. And when patients drop off Christmas gifts, Doctor Carlson gives each of the gift-givers free eye exams.

Leah Villanella adopted several angels from the tree and got free check-ups for her daughters. "It makes my heart happy to do this, and it makes me feel good knowing that there are children in our community that go to school with my daughters that might have a wonderful Christmas because someone cared enough to help just a little bit."

Folks in Skiatook have until Friday to Adopt an Angel.
