A piece of decorative concrete fell from the top of the Mayo Building early Wednesday morning.

The collapse of the frieze was not unexpected, but construction crews had hoped to shore it up before it fell. The sidewalk was blocked off weeks ago after it appeared to be coming off the building and crews were planning to put scaffolding underneath it Wednesday.

It fell early Wednesday morning onto the sidewalk, causing some damage to the building at 500 South Main, but no one was hurt.

The Mayo building also has structural problems in the basement, which have caused delays in the Main Mall reconstruction project.
