COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) _ A long-time coach in the former Big Eight Conference has died.
Former Missouri assistant and later head coach Al Onofrio died this morning in Arizona at age 83.
Onofrio coached the Missouri defense for head coach Dan Devine from 1958 to 1970 as the Tigers won two Big Eight titles and appeared in six bowl games.
When Devine left for the N-F-L, Onofrio was promoted to head coach and was The Associated Press Big Eight coach of the year in 1972.
He coached Missouri for seven seasons and had an overall record of 38-and-41.
Funeral services and burial will be Wednesday in Mesa, Arizona.
