OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ State Representative Todd Hiett of Kellyville has been nominated to be the first Republican speaker of the Oklahoma House since 1921.
After Tuesday's elections, Republicans hold a 57-to-44 advantage in the 101-member House. The House has had a Democratic majority for more than eight decades.
Hiett, a 37-year-old rancher, was re-elected to his fifth two-year term.
Hiett appeared with a large group of GOP freshman Thursday, saying voters had turned away many Democratic candidates in favor of ``individuals who have the right vision for Oklahoma.''
He says economic growth will be the top priority for Republicans. Hiett says he hopes to reach bipartisan agreement with the Senate and the governor's office.
