OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (AP) -- Former Republican Congressman Tom Coburn held on to Oklahoma's US Senate seat for Republicans.

Coburn defeated Democratic Congressman Brad Carson for the post left open by retiring Senator Don Nickles.

State Republican Party Chairman Gary Jones says Coburn gained momentum during the past few weeks and that negative ads by Carson and his supporters backfired.
