A large grass fire threatened several homes this afternoon near Bixby.

Bixby and Liberty fire departments were called out to help control the grass fire near 181st street between Sheridan and Memorial.

Firefighters say it started when a "hay bale" caught fire and spread across the pasture, burning nearly 40 acres.

Captain Jeff Gable/Bixby Fire Department:
"It gave us a little bit of trouble, with the wind and the dry conditions, you can see it was going across this pasture pretty good, we still have hay bale out there burning...but is was going quick."

Captain Jeff Gable says firefighters were able to control the fire before it got close to any homes.
