Tulsarama wrapped up Sunday afternoon, and now work will begin to preserve what was found in the 50-year-old car. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports members of the Tulsa Historical Society will take a little break now that Tulsarama is over, but they say they still have plenty of work to do.
While the buried Belvedere turned out to be water-logged and rust-filled, the time capsule stored alongside it emerged in pristine condition.
A flag, along with scores of other items, were on display at Tulsarama, yearbooks, commemorative plates, rolls of film, even a shaving permit. Shaving was banned in the city during the 1957 Tulsarama. All survived five decades in the ground.
And two days after the mementos were unearthed, they were still attracting onlookers, both the young and the nostalgic.
"We got married in ‘58, so it sort of relates to the beginning of our marriage time,†said Tulsa resident Richard Ziglar.
The Tulsa Historical Society says these time capsule items are just the tip of the iceberg. There are five more boxes of stuff they couldn't fit in the display. After the display is broken down, employees will begin cataloging everything.
"I'm going to go home and take a nap. I'm going to do that, but we'll probably have a little post buried car lull, but we have a lot of work to do,†said Joshua Peck of the Tulsa Historical Society.
The time capsule treasures will be placed in a permanent display at the Tulsa Historical Society, and hopefully remain preserved for the next Tulsarama.
"Just think, in 50 more years they can pull it out and say it's 100 years old now," Ziglar said.
The Tulsa Historical Society had a record of what was placed in the time capsule, but members say they found many more items than they expected in there.
The Belvedere exhibit is expected to open sometime next month.
