CHEROKEE, N.C. (AP) -- Some 150 people revisit a portion of the infamous Trail of Tears Saturday as part of an annual remembrance of the 1838 event that killed thousands.
Participants marked the end of the two-day, 4-mile Trail of Tears Memorial Walk with the Southeastern Tribes Cultural Arts Celebration at the Mountainside Theater in the North Carolina town of Cherokee.
More than 1,500 members of the Cherokee, Creek and other tribes were forced from their homes to make way for white settlement.
An estimated 4,000 American Indians died during the removal to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma.
