OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Student test scores in math and reading are increasing in Oklahoma and nationwide since the federal No Child Left Behind Act was passed in 2002.

But the authors of a recent study on the test scores say the law isn't necessarily the reason for the rising scores.

The study by the Center on Education Policy says student performance increased in reading and math at elementary and high school levels between 2002 and 2006 in Oklahoma. And the gaps between blacks and whites and American Indians and whites became smaller during the period.

Under No Child Left Behind students in grades 3 through 8 are tested each year in reading and math and once more while in high school. Schools and districts must show progress each year or face sanctions.
