OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Debate continues over a sweeping immigration reform measure that would remove public benefits from illegal immigrants in Oklahoma. Audience members requested the resignation of members of the Governor's Advisory Council on Latin American and Hispanic Affairs Friday during a meeting in Oklahoma City because the council failed to convince Governor Henry to veto the immigration bill.
Chairwoman Giovanni Perry says the council wrote a letter to Henry asking him to veto the measure or at least reject some parts of it. But Perry says she understand that lawmakers almost certainly would have overridden his veto since the Legislature passed it on overwhelming vote totals.
A public meeting is planned in Tulsa Saturday on the law and a proposed resolution to check the immigration status of anyone arrested in the city.
