CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- The Senate has voted to cut in half the guest worker program in the compromise immigration bill.
Despite strong opposition from the administration, the Senate overwhelmingly voted to reduce the number of temporary worker visas each year to 200,000.
Labor unions and immigrant groups complained to Democrats about the guest worker program, who focused on shrinking or altering it.
Republicans are trying to respond to conservative critics by bolstering security provisions, and making it harder for illegal immigrants to get on a path to citizenship.
The Senate is also considering a proposal that would allow visas to be revoked without court review.
