Four soldiers were killed and three are missing, possibly abducted by al-Qaida.

All were members of the Army's 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.

The three confirmed dead are: Forty-year-old Sergeant First Class James Connell Junior, of Lake City, Tennessee; 19-year-old Private First Class Daniel Courneya, of Nashville, Michigan; and 21-year-old Private First Class Christopher Murphy, of Lynchburg, Virginia.

The four others are: Twenty-three-year-old Sergeant Anthony Schober, of Reno, Nevada; 25-year-old Specialist Alex Jimenez, of Lawrence, Massachusetts; 20-year-old Private First Class Joseph Anzack Junior, of Torrance, California; and Private Byron Fouty, 19
years old, of Waterford, Michigan. The Pentagon says one of those four is among the dead, but it can't confirm which one.
