ELMHURST, Ill. (AP) -- The athletic conference of which Oral Roberts is a member is changing its name. Officials say that effective June 1st, the Mid-Continent Conference will be renamed The Summit League.
The conference began in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities. In 1989, it changed its name to the Mid-Continent Conference.
Oral Roberts, located in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has been a member of the league since 1997.
Other conference members are IUPUI, Valparaiso, Centenary, Oakland of Michigan, Southern Utah, Western Illinois and Missouri-Kansas City. Valparaiso is leaving the league after this school year.
IPFW, South Dakota State and North Dakota State will become conference members on July 1st. The NCAA Division One conference offers 19 sports for men and women, but not football, wrestling or equestrian.
