CAPITOL HILL (AP) -- The Speaker of the House says Congress will not give President Bush a blank check on the Iraq war.
Nancy Pelosi spoke after the president vetoed a $124 billion war-spending bill that included a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq.
Pelosi said Bush misrepresented what the legislation does, adding that the bill supports the troops. She also said the bill "respects the wishes of the American people to end the Iraq war."
Pelosi says Congress will work with the president to find common ground but added that there is "great distance" between them.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Democrats will continue to work to change the direction of the war in Iraq.
