Oklahoma State Duo Powers Cowboys To Golf Title
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) -- The Oklahoma State duo of Pablo Martin and Ryan Posey each shot 2-under-par 68 Tuesday to help the Cowboys pull away from Texas A&M for the Big 12 men's golf championship.
Oklahoma State led Texas A&M by five strokes after 36 holes on Monday, and on Tuesday shot 7-over 287 to finish the tournament up by seven over the runner-up Aggies. Texas Tech finished a distant third, 27 strokes behind the winners.
Martin, who went into Tuesday's final round tied for third, two strokes out of the lead, birdied five of his last nine holes at Prairie Dunes Country Club to finish with a 1-over 211 to earn medalist honors.
"I hit some good shots and some bad ones coming in," Martin said. '"I'm happy with the way I handled the situation."
Posey started the day five strokes back in a tie for sixth, but finished in second place at 4-over-par 214. Nebraska's Brady Schnell, who was tied with Martin after 36 holes, finished third at 215.
"This is a tough conference. It has not been easy to win at all," said Oklahoma State coach Mike McGraw. "Texas has won three, Baylor one, Oklahoma one and Kansas one. I'm pretty sure Texas A&M will win one as well."
