State House Approves Changes To College Scholarship Program

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Home-schooled children will be able to participate in a popular state-funded college scholarship program under legislation approved by the Oklahoma House Monday. State House members voted 82-17 for the bill after agreeing to amendments that would make changes to the Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program.

The program pays the college tuition of students from families that earn less than $50,000 a year who take a college curriculum, maintain a 2.5 grade point average and stay out of trouble.

The amendments would allow children who have been home schooled to apply for OHLAP scholarships and restricts scholarships to U.S. citizens.

They also require recipients to maintain a 2.5 grade point average in all but one so-called "grace period" semester in college, a provision some lawmakers say might lead to lost scholarships.
