UNDATED (AP) _ Barry Bonds continues to move closer to Hank Aaron.

Bonds homered for the second straight day as the San Francisco Giants topped Arizona 2-1 Sunday afternoon. It was his 740th career homer, leaving him 15 shy of Aaron's all-time mark.

Matt Cain went the distance on a 3-hitter in a game that lasted just one hour and 56 minutes.

In other National League action:

_ Edgar Renteria and Kelly Johnson hit 3-run homers to rally Atlanta past the New York Mets 9-6. Kelly Johnson homered on the game's first pitch before snapping a six-all tie in the 8th with his second blast of the afternoon.

_ Albert Pujols launched a 3-run homer in the 10th inning to lift St. Louis past the Chicago Cubs 12-9. Scott Rolen had a career-high 5 hits, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored for the Redbirds.

_ Dan Uggla homered twice and had 6 RBIs as Florida ripped Washington 12-6.

_ Ryan Howard hit a 2-run homer and drove in 3 runs as Philadelphia clobbered Cincinnati 9-3.

_ Bill Hall homered and Dave Bush carried a shutout into the 9th inning of Milwaukee's 4-3 win at Houston.

_ Jason Hirsh out pitched Greg Maddux for the second time this season, allowing 4 hits over 7 innings as Colorado doubled up San Diego 4-2.

_ After blowing a 2-run lead in Saturday night's 10-inning loss, the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the LA Dodgers 7-5. Chris Duffy had 3 hits and scored 3 runs.

Over to the American League, where the Detroit Tigers were down to their final out before avoiding a three-game sweep. Placido Polanco singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th as the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-5. Marcus Thames extended the game with a 2-out, 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th before Polanco collected his second RBI of the game.

_ Ryan Garko hit a go-ahead, 3-run homer in the 9th inning to push Cleveland past Tampa Bay 6-4. Jhonny Peralta smacked a 2-run homer off James Shields, who allowed just 1 other hit over 8 innings while tying a team record with 12 strikeouts.

_ Ervin Santana pitched 7 strong innings and Garret Anderson drove in 2 runs to lead the Los Angeles Angels past Seattle 6-1.

_ Hank Blalock delivered a go-ahead, 2-run single while the Texas Rangers were scoring 3 times in the 8th to beat Oakland 4-3.

_ Nick Markakisand Miguel Tejada each had 3 RBIs as Baltimore whipped Toronto 7-3 to complete their first three-game home sweep of the Blue Jays in 13 years.

_ Jorge De La Rosa allowed no earned runs while throwing a career-high 8 innings to lead Kansas City past Minnesota 3-1.
