Tulsa’s 1921 race riots take center stage in the U.S. Congress. A lawsuit filed by the riots survivors will be the subject of legislation and a hearing on Capitol Hill on Monday. John Conyers Jr., a Detroit congressman, will introduce a bill to extend the statute of limitations on a lawsuit filed against the city of Tulsa and Oklahoma.
In 2003, more than 400 plaintiffs sued the state, the city of Tulsa and its police department, seeking unspecified damages. A federal judge threw out the case saying he could not find a reason to extend the statute of limitations, which had expired 80 years earlier.
The 1921 riot reduced the city's prosperous Greenwood section to ashes following accusations that a black man had assaulted a white female elevator operator.
