NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ The University of Oklahoma on Friday conducted a test of its emergency communications system designed to warn students and employees in case of a potential emergency.

The university began working on the system in January to send instructions and updates during an emergency via phone, text message and e-mail, OU President David Boren said.

``It is our belief that continuous and rapid notification is one of the best protections available for members of our community,'' Boren said in a statement. ``A transparent system which shares information also helps prevent panic fueled by rumors and misinformation.''

Boren said officials will review the results of Friday's test to determine if any changes need to be made and will later test the system once each semester.
