OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The widow of the first American Indian to receive the Medal of Honor during World War II was honored Tuesday during a joint session of the Oklahoma Legislature that recognized the state's legendary 45th Infantry Division.

Oklahoma's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, presented a ceremonial Medal of Honor flag to Yolanda Childers, widow of Medal of Honor recipient Ernest Childers, who died in March 2005 at the age of 87.

Childers received the nation's highest military honor for eliminating two German machine gun nests near Oliveto, Italy, on Sept. 22, 1943.

A Creek Indian with some Cherokee ancestry, Childers entered the National Guard's 45th Infantry Division at Chilocco Indian School in 1937. The unit was called to duty during World War II.
