MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas State has hired assistant men's basketball coach Frank Martin as its head coach.

School officials made the decision Friday, less than 24 hours after Bob Huggins resigned to take the head coaching position at his alma mater, West Virginia.

It will the first head coaching job at a Division I school for the 40-year-old Martin, who was Huggins' top assistant and recruiting coordinator last season.

Before that, Martin spent 15 years as a high school coach in Miami and was an assistant at Northeastern University. He also spent two years at Cincinnati -- one under Huggins and the other under Huggins' replacement, Andy Kennedy.

Another assistant coach, Dalonte Hill, was retained as the associate head coach.

Huggins was introduced at West Virginia earlier in the day.
