MANASQUAN, N.J. (AP) _ A mother stabbed her 9-year-old son to death before trying to kill herself, police said Wednesday.

Kathlene M. DeMichele, 46, was in critical condition at a hospital. She was charged with murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Luis Valentin said police received a 911 call Tuesday night. The first officers on the scene found DeMichele bleeding profusely, and her 9-year-old son Charles dead in a van outside their Manasquan apartment.

``No one saw this coming,'' family members of DeMichele said in a statement.

Bail for DeMichele was set at $1 million. Authorities did not say what they believe prompted the violence.

Manasquan is about 40 miles east of Trenton.
