Mcdonnell To Coach USA Middle Distance In 2008 Olympics

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) Arkansas track and field coach John McDonnell has been named the USA's middle distance coach for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

McDonnell has coached 23 Olympians over three decades, but this is the first time he'll be part of the Team USA staff.

Bubba Thornton of Texas is the Team USA head coach.

McDonnell is in his 35th season at Arkansas. Last month, he led the Razorbacks to their 81st conference title and 26th indoor track and field conference title.

He has been named national coach of the year 12 times in indoor track, 11 times in outdoor track and seven times in cross country.
