Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon in Poteau for an Oklahoma Army National Guard soldier killed in Afghanistan. Services for Hughie will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Poteau High School gym.
Sgt. Buddy Hughie was killed Monday. The Department of Defense says Hughie was killed in action when he tried to help two wounded Afghan soldiers after their unit was attacked. He was serving with the 1st Battalion, 180th Infantry.
The National Guard says Hughie's remains will be taken to South Carolina after Sunday's service and will be buried near his wife's childhood home.
Hughie, a 2000 graduate of Poteau High School, is survived by his wife, Alexis, and 3-month-old son, Cooper.
Hughie previously deployed to Afghanistan in 2002-2003 as part of an engineering unit with the South Carolina National Guard.
