LOS ANGELES (AP) Checotah, Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood wins her first two Grammy awards and two other state acts also win the music awards today.
Underwood won best female country vocal performance for her hit "Jesus Take the Wheel." The song's writers, Brett James, Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson, won the Grammy for best country song.
Underwood, a former "American Idol" champ, singled out the show's creator, Simon Fuller, in her acceptance speech.
Later in the show, Underwood received a second Grammy, for best new artist.
The Flaming Lips, an alternative band from Oklahoma City, and Dave Fridmann won the award for best non-classical engineered album for their album "At War With the Mystics."
The Flaming Lips also won best rock instrumental performance for the song, "The Wizard Turns On ...".
Oklahoma City native Vice Gill won best male country vocal performance for the song, "The Reason Why."
