Governor Brad Henry has sent President Bush a request for a major disaster declaration for eastern Oklahoma.
23 counties are on the list. They include Adair, Atoka, Bryan, Cherokee, Choctaw, Coal, Cotton, Craig, Delaware, Haskell, Hughes, Johnston, Latimer, Mayes, McIntosh, Muskogee, Okfuskee, Okmulgee, Ottawa, Pittsburg, Seminole, Sequoyah and Wagoner. More counties may be added later according to the governor’s office.
A major disaster declaration by President Bush would clear the way for individual assistance for storm victims. The winter storm, which hit the state on January 12th, brought down power lines, trees and damaged homes and businesses across the state.
Bush approved an emergency declaration for all 77 Oklahoma counties on January 14. That declaration covered federal assistance for federal assets that were needed to respond to areas affected by the winter storm.
