A 20-year-old Owasso gymnastics teacher is grateful to be alive. She narrowly escaped an oncoming car by jumping off a 25-foot bridge.
Jenny Farrell spoke exclusively with News on 6 anchor Tami Marler about her harrowing ordeal.
"She was a brave little girl who made a decision and did what she had to do,†said Tulsa Police Corporal Bruce Burton.
20-year-old Jennifer Farrell was still shaken after colliding with another vehicle on the icy 46th Street North bridge when something caught her eye.
"And as I was walking to my car I was about to the front of my vehicle and I see headlights coming," Farrell said.
Faced with the possibility of being smashed between her car and the concrete barrier she acted on instinct.
"Something just told me to jump," she said. "Like both your legs over on one side, and I kind of grabbed on with my fingertips, and my fingertips are all torn up, I held on for a second and then I dropped," said Farrell.
Jenny's been in gymnastics since the 3rd grade. She told her mother she thought of the bridge like a balance beam, she grabbed a hold of it, heaved herself over the side, 20 to 25 feet down, face first in the mud.
"It was a miracle where I landed because my face was completely on mud,†said Farrell. “My whole body was on mud and then right by me there was rocks there was plants, like weeds growing up that I could’ve landed on, and I landed on all straight mud."
Jennifer is sore, but grateful.
"It's actually hitting me today,†she said. “I'm thanking God that I'm here and that I reacted how I did. If not I don't know what the end result would be."
Tulsa firefighters pulled Jenny from the mud and EMSA transported her to an area emergency room where she was treated for a broken arm and released.
