NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A lawmaker says the government plans to extend -- by at least six months -- transitional housing assistance for those displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu today said she got the word from Federal Emergency Management Agency director David Paulison.
Katrina hit the Gulf coast in August of 2005 -- forcing several hundred thousand Louisiana residents to evacuate to Texas and other states.
Rita slammed southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana the following month.
The program was scheduled to expire next month.
A formal announcement from FEMA is expected next week.
