ATLANTA (AP) UPS expects to deliver 21 million packages Wednesday, its busiest shipping day of the year as customers rush to send their holiday gifts.
Its normal average daily volume is 15 million packages. On Wednesday, the world's largest shipping carrier projected it would deliver 240 packages every second.
On Friday, the Atlanta-based company expects to have its largest volume of air shipments for the year by delivering roughly 5.6 million packages, more than double its normal average air volume.
UPS brings in extra workers for the holiday season each year to help with the added volume of package deliveries. This year, UPS, also known as United Parcel Service Inc., added roughly 60,000 seasonal workers.
Memphis, Tennessee based FedEx Corp.'s busiest shipping day of the year was Monday, when it projected it would deliver 9.8 million packages through its express and ground networks.
