UNDATED (AP) -- Four decades before "A Christmas Story" warned, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid," another Christmas classic was born.

George Bailey found the meaning of life in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life."

The evergreen film starring James Stewart and Donna Reed had a preview screening for charity at the old Globe Theatre in New York on this date in 1946, one day before its "official" world premiere.

Karolyn Grimes, who played Zuzu, is now 66. She was the little girl who said, "Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings."

Grimes has parlayed her six minutes of on-screen fame into a late-life career, appearing at Christmas festivals across the country.

She says for some reason, the character she played "embodies the image or maybe the power" to make people happy.
