WASHINGTON (AP) Roy Hibbert scored 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Jeff Green chipped in with 15 points as Georgetown defeated Oral Roberts 73-58 on Saturday.
The Hoyas (6-3), who dropped out of the top 25 in the latest poll, took control of the action from the opening tip and led by as many as 21 points in the 1st half. Jonathan Wallace added 12 points and Marc Egerson tacked on 11 points.
The Golden Eagles (4-4), who earlier this season pulled off a road upset over then 3rd ranked Kansas, got as close as 10 at 63-53 with 5:04 left in the game. They were led by Ken Tutt with 21 points and Caleb Green who added 15 as Marchello Vealy chipped in with 10.
The Hoyas opened the game with a 14-2 run, with Green and Hibbert each scoring 4 points. Hibbert hit his first six attempts from the floor to finished 10-12 and the Hoyas had their largest lead of the game at 37-16. Hibbert finished with 15 points in the half and the Hoyas went to the locker room with a 40-20 lead.
Tutt scored 15 in the 2nd half, including the goal that cut Georgetown's lead to 10 late in the game. Hibbert then followed up a Wallace miss with an emphatic dunk to seemingly end the Golden Eagles run. Hibbert and Green controlled the action inside throughout the game for the Hoyas, repeatedly getting themselves in position for one slam dunk after another. The Hoyas shot 58.3 from the floor.
The Golden Eagles still have the All-time edge over the Hoyas at 3-2.
The game was the first of two Saturday games matching sons of John Thompson Jr. against those of Eddie Sutton. John Thompson III coaches the Hoyas and Scott Sutton is the head man for Oral Roberts. Saturday night, Oklahoma State, led by head coach Sean Sutton, travels to Ball State where Ronny Thompson is in his first year as head coach.
