MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- The Muskogee County Sheriff's office is asking the public to help the family of a reserve police officer who was killed while trying to help at an accident site.
24-year-old Eldon McBride was standing on a bridge assessing the damage from a previous collision when a tractor-trailer rig slid into his vehicle and that of Clifford -L- Haney on Friday.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the rig collided with a traffic control trailer McBride was pulling, causing it to slam into Haney's car. Haney either jumped or was knocked over the guard rail into the Arkansas River. McBride died of his injuries at the scene.
Sheriff Charles Pearson says McBride was police chief for the Boynton Police Department before it was dismantled earlier this year. McBride recently applied for work at the sheriffs office and was working with Warner Police Department as a reserve officer.
