TULSA, Okla. (AP) _ State higher education regents have narrowed their search for a new chancellor to six candidates and want to make their final decision before the state Legislature convenes in February.

John Massey of Durant, the chairman of the State Regents for Higher Education, says 12 people, from all over the country, applied for the chancellor's job.

He says only one of those 12 is from Oklahoma, but that person made the cut to six, as Massey said the semifinalists come from in-state and out-of-state.

Massey says the applicants, quote, ``look pretty sharp'' and include, quote, ``some good names,'' although Massey declined to identify any of them.

Massey says regents hope to have narrowed the field to two, three or four finalists by Wednesday or Thursday. He says regents want the final decision to be unanimous.
