NORMAN, Okla. (AP) A Norman man has been identified as the second person to die when a single-engine experimental plane crashed in a vacant lot here.
Norman Regional Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Wood confirmed that Paul Dwight Black, 50, died about 9:40 a.m. Saturday.
Black and Robert C. Noble Jr., 50, of Choctaw, crashed in the amateur-built kit plane about a mile southwest of Max Westheimer Field Saturday morning. Their plane, an RV-7 model, went down in some grass between a car dealership and a restaurant.
The plane, which took off from Twin Lakes Airport in Midwest City, was the last of three RV-7 airplanes that were flying into the small airport. The first two planes landed safely at that airport.
The plane narrowly missed hitting a busy Interstate 35 and other businesses in the area, witnesses said. One witness said it looked like the pilot steered the plane mid-crash to avoid hurting other people.
Roland Herwig, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said it may be weeks or months until a report on the crash is released.
He said the FAA will handle the investigation.
